Limited Edition Giclée Series (2023)
Disintegration (2020)
Pangolin Bronze by Gail Catlin
“During the lockdown in South Africa, my art dealer Mark Read from the Everard Read Gallery (@everard_read_cape_town_ ) called me up and asked if I could make a bronze Pangolin... I knew very little about Pangolins, so I decided to do some research.
A friend of mine Jackie Heteren who lives in the bush suggested that I look at a documentary called The Eye of the Pangolin. I started my research and watched the extraordinary documentary which captured the pre-historic creatures in their natural habitat.
Pangolins are beautiful, silent and elegant. Not only did the documentary show me their mystery, but it was also contrasted with the eye opening reality of how these beautiful creatures were becoming extinct. It saddened me that within various cultures - Pangolin’s were being killed for medicinal purposes as well as for food as they were seen as a delicacy. They were also seen as a possible link to the source of how the COVID-19 virus came to be.
After having given it a lot of time and long hard thought - I wanted to project what was actually happening to them in the year 2020... So I decided to make a disintegrated Pangolin where I wanted to capture their beauty and silence.
This is my version of these formidable creatures in their desperate plight against extinction and the cruelty of mans greed.”
